While most bloggers use Ping-o-Matic to handle their pings, I have found that using a comprehensive ping list is a much more ideal solution.  By using pings, your site can inform other sites that it has fresh content and should be crawled or indexed.  So each additional ping service that you can add to your update list increases your site’s exposure online.

By default, WordPress pings the sites on it’s update list each time a post is published or edited.  While this sounds nice, this feature has taken a lot of heat over the years for a few reasons:

• Pinging your update list unnecessarily and frequently can cause your site to be banned from certain sites.
• WordPress pings the update list as soon as the publish button is clicked, so even if you schedule a post for the future it will ping the update list immediately.

Please don’t get me wrong here, this is a great feature.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the WordPress developers fixed these issues over the next few releases.  But anyways, let’s get down to making a great update list for your blog!

Editing Your Update List

Log in to your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to the Settings tab.  Now click on the Writing tab under Settings.  Once you are on the Writing page navigate down the page to Update Services.

This box is now your best friend, and if it is utilized correctly it can yield a steady traffic stream from users searching the web.  My personal update list is below, please feel free to use it, edit it, and share it!  Most of the links are current, but since it is such a big list it is hard to keep track of sites which may have gone offline.  If any sites are dead they will not affect your ping performance so you can leave them in the list.
